The Director of the film Michael Grandage did an excellent job of adapting the novel and following the story of three friends, Tom Burgess, Patrick Hazelwood, and Marion Taylor who found themselves in a complicated three-way relationship. In the 1950’s Tom, a policeman found himself falling in love with a teacher Marion and while their relationship starts to bloom Tom explores a passionate homosexual relationship with a museum curator named Patrick. Later Patrick gets reported to the police as homosexuality was treated as a horrible crime back in the time and as a result, he is forced to spend quite a few years of his life behind the bars.
