Singer-actor Selena Gomez recently was rewarded with the 2022 Morton E. Ruderman Award. Selena has never shied away from disclosing her own journey with mental health issues. 

She opened up about her bipolar disorder diagnosis and also shared her unfiltered story of battling with an autoimmune disease – lupus. 

Accepting the 2022 Morton E. Ruderman Award Gomez says, “We know that the stigma associated with mental health has led to the silence around the issue. I want to change that, especially for young people,” she added, “I’ve been open, and honest about my own journey with my mental health, and it hasn’t always been easy, but it’s something that I am constantly working on.”

In her documentary ‘My mind & Me’ Selena makes a promise of sharing only her deepest darkest secrets and needless to say she does exactly that. Alek Keshishian directed documentary exhibits pretty difficult chapters from the singer’s life. In a clip taken from the 2016 tour rehearsal, Selena is seen crying. “I have no idea what the f***I’m doing… It sucks the life out of me and I don’t want to perform,” she admits. She also admits to having a not-so-good relationship with fame. Now aged 30, the global icon Selena Gomez says she has been working since she was seven. 

In her acceptance speech, she mentions, “

My hope is that by sharing my story, and using my platform, I can encourage others to get the help and support they need to address their mental health.”

In 2020, the ‘Good for you singer, launched her makeup line Rare Beauty and started the Rare Impact Fund where part of the sales amount from this brand is directly donated in order to increase mental health services and awareness. Till now the fund has raised about $1.7M and it has been distributed among different mental health organizations. 

In her recent post on Twitter Selena shares her new My Mind & Me merch collection and pledges that 100% of the net proceeds will go to Rare Impact Fund.
