Almond oil is one of those versatile oils that are available in the armamentarium of mineral oils.  Now using the word mineral oil makes you feel that it can cause acne. But almond oil is a natural non-comedogenic oil because it’s very lightweight. It has abundant vitamins, minerals, fatty acids as well as antioxidants, and vitamin E which gives you complete nourishment, care,  protection as well as treatment for your skin and hair. Now let us understand how and what is almond oil.

What is Almond Oil?

Almond oil is extracted from the almond nut tree. It could be bitter almond or sweet almond. Generally, bitter almond oil is used for aroma therapies and soaps and massages but you cannot consume it. Sweet almond oil on the contrary can be consumed. It is used in a variety of skincare and hair care products.

Benefits Of Almond Oil

Now let us see how the sweet almond oil can benefit our skin and hair.

  • Almond oil by virtue of its nourishing tendency it helps smoothen dry, flaky skin so it is one of the treatment of choices for us when it comes to skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema and dermatitis and many a times even palms and souls which have extreme scaling and dryness.

So almond oil is a natural antioxidant by virtue of large amounts  of vitamin E present in it. This works at the cellular level preventing ultraviolet light  damage. Thus it leaves the skin more nourished, prevents pigmentation as well as premature aging.

  • The other wonderful aspect of vitamin E is that it can prevent stretch mark. During puberty and  pregnancy we notice the stretching of skin which leads to degradation of collagen and elastin but  if massaged with almond oil regularly you notice less stretch marks and these stretch marks are easy and amenable to treatment. So remember when you’re planning to go to the gym or just when you know you’re pregnant start massaging the areas which are going to expand like your arms,  your thighs, your abdomen with natural pure almond oil to prevent those stretch marks.

  • The other thing that almond oil works very well with is preventing aging like I said that you know it reduces at the cellular level the damage caused by ultraviolet light which subsequently leads to early premature aging. It causes degradation of collagen elastin and thereby promoting lines and wrinkles but if you use your almond oil in your early 20s and 30s you notice that these lines and wrinkles take a little longer time to appear and maybe if you continue for a long time you can push your skin from aging for almost a decade. We know that almond oil is used in wound therapy. So, in wound healing almond oil causes natural growth of collagen and prevents scars.

So for acne and acne prone skin if you are not allergic to nut oil or almonds in itself you can start using almond oil-based creams, lotions or even pure almond oil on your skin. Massage it immediately after face wash when your skin is wet or moist. Keep it for a few seconds before you use your sunscreen. Almond oil  here will prevent acne scars and its antimicrobial activity will also reduce the pus filled acne.

Couple of things you need to remember with almond oil is that if you are sensitive to nut,  any kind of nuts be peanuts, cashews or anything remember to first do a patch test before you apply the almond oil on your face.

  • Secondly, you need to store natural pure almond oil in a clean,  cool, dry, safe place in presence of oxygen and heat it can turn rancid and then may not give you the right benefits that you’re looking for. Almond oil like it’s wonderful for the skin is also great for the hair.

Here again, it works at the cellular level of the hair to prevent frizziness reduces the damage caused by external atmospheric you know pollution, dryness, ultraviolet light and keeps the hair less frizzy, keeps it more nourished, healthy and shiny. So do look for almond oil-containing preparations like soaps, lotions, body butters, face cleansers, even serums which can help nourish your skin keep it smooth prevent scarring as well as premature aging.
